From Blue Monday to Blue Mind: Surfing Through Winter

Why the Blues?

Last Monday (15 January) was Blue Monday, often referred to as the most depressing day of the year. The festive glow of the holidays has faded, the depths of winter are in full swing, work has piled up, and summer still feels like a distant dream.

But we surfers see things differently, don’t we? We have a unique advantage: we’re dreamers. We dream of endless summer days, crystal-clear blue waters, and achieving our next goal or perfecting that new trick on the waves. The mere thought of warm water, steady winds, and sunny skies can soothe the soul, lifting even the gloomiest of spirits.

As Katie Lockhart wrote in Vogue:
“As soon as I hear the sound of waves crashing onto the sand, my shoulders relax. I walk ankle-deep into the water, and my jaw unclenches. My breath naturally slows, and I start to feel lighter, even content.”
She wonders, “Is it my inner Aquarius? Or is it the Blue Mind theory?”

The Blue Mind theory suggests that being in or near water induces a semi-meditative state, positively impacting our mental and physical well-being.

According to Blue Mind science, because the human body is largely made up of water, our brains instinctively recognize water as a natural and comforting environment. Call it the soothing, surprising neuroscience of water.

So, how can we conquer Blue Mondays and embrace the Blue Mind theory? Here are a few ideas:

  1. Read the book.
Pick up Blue Mind by Wallace J. Nichols to gain a fascinating scientific perspective on why water has such a profound effect on our minds and bodies.
  2. Be near water.
Keros may still be a few months away, but there’s always a nearby lake, river, swimming pool, or seafront to enjoy. Better yet, take your wetsuit and hit your local cold beach for some windsurfing, kitesurfing, or wingfoiling—it’s never too cold for a dose of the sea!
  3. Plan your summer.
Lock in your summer vacation now (at Keros, of course!). Booking your trip gives you something to look forward to during the remaining months of winter and spring. You’ll also have time to plan your goals, tricks, and moments to make the most of your time on the water.

Remember, the antidote to Blue Monday isn’t avoidance—it’s dreaming, planning, and diving into the blue. See you at Keros!
